Hot weather can be dangerous for your pets, so it’s important to help them stay cool and hydrated.
Keep Them Cool
- Always provide access to shade indoors and outdoors.
- Make sure fresh, cool water is available at all times.
- Use cooling aids like damp towels, paddling pools, frozen treats, or ice cubes in water bowls.
- Never place a towel over your dog, as it can trap heat.
You can also pick up a range of summer essentials from our Wade Street shop or shop online via our website, including cooling mats, travel water bottles, cooling coats and frozen treat toys to help keep pets comfortable during the heatwave.
Exercise Safely
- Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower.
- Avoid running or cycling with your dog in hot weather.
- Check pavement temperatures before walks — if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws.
Signs of burnt paws include:
- Limping
- Refusing to walk
- Licking feet
- Redness or blisters
Extra Summer Care
- Groom dogs regularly to remove excess fur and prevent matting.
- Use pet-safe sunscreen on exposed skin, especially for light-coloured dogs.
Never Leave Dogs in Hot Spaces
Cars, caravans, conservatories, and sheds can become dangerously hot within minutes — even on mild days. Never leave a dog inside unattended.
Watch for Heatstroke
Contact a vet immediately if your dog shows signs of heatstroke, including:
- Heavy panting
- Excessive drooling
- Lethargy or drowsiness
- Unsteady movement
- Vomiting or collapse
