Tiny kitten shoved through our door… can you help us with Bonfire’s care costs?

On the morning of Monday 20th October, our team at the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & Bradford made a heartbreaking discovery. A tiny 10-week-old black kitten had been shoved through the door of our Animal Centre – frightened, alone, and trapped inside a cat bubble bag.

We’ve named this gorgeous little boy Bonfire. When our staff opened the bag, little Bonfire was understandably shaking with fear after a traumatic ordeal. Thankfully, after an urgent vet assessment, he’s been given the all-clear and is now safe and warm in our care.

We are so grateful that we were here when Bonfire needed us most – but sadly, our centre is already full, with more animals waiting to come in every single day. On top of caring for animals like Bonfire, we’re also working hard to raise funds for our Really Big ReFURb, to make vital improvements to our outdated animal facilities.

Your support means everything right now. Any donations will help cover Bonfire’s ongoing vet checks, microchip, vaccinations, food, and shelter while he waits for a loving home. Every contribution, big or small, helps us give abandoned animals the care and comfort they deserve.

We know times are tough, and many people are struggling with the rising cost of living and pet care. Often, pets are taken in with the best intentions, but their needs can quickly become overwhelming. Please, if you ever find yourself unable to cope, reach out to us or another charity for support — we’re always just a phone call away and will do everything we can to help.

Bonfire’s story is also a reminder of the importance of neutering – a simple act that prevents unwanted litters and helps reduce the growing number of cats and kittens needing rescue spaces. By neutering and thinking carefully before taking on a pet, you can help prevent heartbreaking situations like Bonfire’s.

We also want to raise awareness this Adoptober that black cats and kittens, just like Bonfire, are often overlooked in rescues – waiting up to three times longer to be adopted than cats of other colours. It’s a sad reality based purely on superstition and appearance, and we hope Bonfire’s story helps shine a light on this unfair struggle.

Bonfire is now in the hands of our incredible Animal Care Team and receiving the love and care he needs. With your support, he’ll soon be ready to find the happy home he deserves – and we’ll continue to be here for every animal who needs us next.

Please, if you can, donate to support Bonfire. Together, we can turn fear into hope, and abandonment into a second chance at love… thank you so much from all of our team and from our newest resident – Bonfire.
